The Central Government has extended the tenure of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, offering additional time to resolve the long-standing water-sharing dispute between states.

According to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the tribunal will now continue its work until January 13, 2027. The earlier tenure was set to conclude in April 2026.

Ongoing Odisha–Chhattisgarh Dispute

The tribunal was established to address disagreements between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the sharing and management of the Mahanadi River.

Odisha has raised concerns regarding the construction of barrages and upstream water usage by Chhattisgarh, stating that these activities may impact downstream water flow, affecting livelihoods and ecosystems.

Focus on Comprehensive Resolution

With the extension, the tribunal will continue examining technical data, expert reports, and submissions from both states. The additional time is expected to support a more balanced and evidence-based decision-making process.

The outcome of this dispute is critical, as it directly impacts:

  • Irrigation and agriculture
  • Drinking water availability
  • Ecological sustainability

Centre’s Approach

The extension reflects the Centre’s intent to ensure a thorough legal and technical review before delivering a final verdict. Authorities aim to reach a solution that is fair, sustainable, and beneficial for all stakeholders involved.
