The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the Superintendent of Central GST, Balasore, Odisha, for accepting a Rs 50,000 bribe from a complainant seeking a GST refund.
CBI officials registered the case on May 8, 2025, after receiving a complaint that the Superintendent and an Assistant Commissioner demanded Rs 50,000 to release a GST refund of Rs 16 lakh for a company. Acting on the complaint, the agency laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while taking the bribe.
The CBI team swiftly apprehended the officer and confirmed that further investigation is underway to identify other officials involved in the bribery network. The agency emphasised its commitment to curbing corruption within government departments and ensuring transparency in tax administration.
Sources said the accused had allegedly been pressuring the complainant for payment to expedite the refund process. The CBI’s operation exposed the illegal demand and reinforced its zero-tolerance stance against bribery.
