A tragic fire on a wooden dhow near the Strait of Hormuz killed one Indian sailor and injured four others, while 17 crew members were rescued safely.
The incident occurred on Friday when the vessel, carrying general cargo, caught fire and later capsized close to the strategic maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Sources confirmed that 18 Indian crew members were onboard at the time of the accident.
Rescue teams managed to save 17 sailors, while four injured crew members were rushed to Dubai for medical treatment. Officials said the injured are safe and receiving proper care. The deceased sailor’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire. The accident comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route that handles a significant share of the world’s crude supply.
The Indian Consulate in Dubai immediately stepped in to assist the rescued sailors. Officials met the crew on Friday night and assured them of continued support. The consulate also coordinated with the dhow owner to ensure proper arrangements for the survivors.
