A private bus lost balance and rammed into a stationary truck from behind on National Highway‑16 near Gudikhala Square under Basta police limits on Sunday morning, leaving the driver and helper critically injured.
According to police, the bus was travelling from Baleshwar towards West Bengal when it struck the truck parked by the roadside. The impact shattered the front portion of the bus completely. Fortunately, no passengers were on board at the time of the accident.
National Highway patrolling police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured driver and helper, who were immediately shifted to Basta hospital in serious condition.
Basta police later reached the site, seized the vehicles, and launched further investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Officials said preliminary findings suggest the bus lost balance before hitting the truck.
The accident has raised concerns over road safety along NH‑16, a busy corridor where frequent mishaps are reported. Authorities stressed the need for stricter monitoring of parked heavy vehicles and better awareness among drivers to prevent such tragedies.
