Maoist Attack in Bastar

Armed Maoists have brutally murdered two innocent villagers in the Tarrem region of Bijapur district, part of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division.

The incident occurred late Sunday night, sparking deep outrage and grief across the region.

According to initial reports, a group of 4 to 5 heavily armed Naxals stormed the villages of Chhutwai and Bada Tarrem and executed the victims using locally made firearms. The deceased have been identified as Kawasi Joga (55) of Chutwai and Manglu Kursam (50) of Bada Tarrem.

Police sources have confirmed that the Jagargunda Area Committee of the Maoists has claimed responsibility for the attack. Preliminary investigation suggests the motive might be retaliatory—Manglu Kursam’s son, Nandu, had previously surrendered to authorities after disassociating from the Naxal movement.

Authorities suspect that Nandu’s surrender may have incited the Maoists, who allegedly targeted his family out of vengeance. However, since Nandu was not present in the village at the time, the attackers are believed to have executed his father instead.

A police team has been dispatched to the area to investigate further and ensure security. Senior officials stated that while the motive is still under scrutiny, the use of violence against civilians underscores the continuing threat posed by militant insurgents in the region.

This incident adds to the growing concern over Naxalite presence in Bastar and reiterates the urgent need for community protection and long-term peace-building efforts.
