BJD SIR extension Odisha floods

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has urged the State Chief Electoral Officer, RS Gopalan, to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) claims and objections period by at least 30 days beyond August 19, citing the extraordinary flood and heavy rainfall situation across Odisha.

In a memorandum submitted Wednesday, the party recalled its earlier representation on July 30 and stressed the enormous workload pending at various levels, including notices, hearings, and verifications. It argued that the prevailing natural calamity has made it impractical for electors, Booth Level Agents (BLAs), and officials to complete procedures within the current deadline.

The BJD thanked the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its earlier extension from August 4 to August 19 but said the ongoing floods have further disrupted road communication, displaced thousands, and shifted public focus to safety and relief.

“Closing the claims and objections process on August 19, despite continuing disruption, may deprive genuine electors of a meaningful opportunity to protect their electoral rights,” the party stated. It emphasised that no eligible voter should lose the chance for inclusion, correction, or restoration due to natural calamities.

The party also sought special outreach and facilitation for electors in flood‑affected areas, along with wide publicity of any extended deadline, to ensure equitable participation in the electoral process.
