The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced a series of protests across Odisha on July 21, demanding a judicial probe into the tragic death of Soumyashree, a student of Fakir Mohan College, Balasore.
The party will gherao the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) offices in Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Berhampur to press for their demand.
Speaking to the media, BJD Vice President Debi Prasad Mishra said, “We will gherao RDC offices to demand justice for Soumyashree. A judicial investigation is the only way to uncover the truth behind this heartbreaking incident.”
The student’s death has sparked widespread outrage, with allegations of negligence and unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances. Civil society groups and student organisations have also joined the chorus for a transparent inquiry.
The BJD’s protest is expected to see participation from its youth and student wings, signalling the party’s intent to escalate pressure on the administration.
Soumyashree’s sudden death has left the state in shock, with many calling for accountability and clarity. While preliminary reports remain inconclusive, the demand for a judicial probe has gained momentum, especially among student communities.
The July 21 protests are likely to intensify political discourse in Odisha, with opposition parties and activists watching closely. The state government’s response to the demand for a judicial probe will be crucial in shaping public sentiment.
