Matteo Berrettini delivered one of the most shocking results of the Monte Carlo Masters by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
Ranked 90th in the world, Berrettini became the first player this decade to hand Medvedev a double bagel on clay.
Medvedev, currently world No. 10, struggled throughout the match against Berrettini’s aggressive baseline play. His frustration boiled over in the second set when he smashed his racket after failing to find answers. The match lasted just over an hour, leaving fans stunned by the one-sided scoreline.
Berrettini entered the contest after advancing past Roberto Bautista Agut, who retired early in their first-round clash. Medvedev, meanwhile, was making his Monte Carlo debut and failed to adapt to the conditions.
The Italian broke serve repeatedly, dictating rallies with powerful forehands and precise serves. Medvedev attempted to counter with defensive play but could not sustain momentum. The loss marked one of the most lopsided defeats of Medvedev’s career.
Berrettini now advances to the next round with renewed confidence, while Medvedev faces questions about his clay-court form ahead of the rest of the season.
