Odisha CID Crime Branch assumed control of the Balianta cases involving alleged sexual assault and the mob killing of Soumya Ranjan Swain.
The decision came after the DGP directed the transfer of the investigation from Balianta Police Station to the CID Crime Branch for clarity and fairness.
CID CB registered Case No. 06/2026 and Case No. 07/2026 on May 9, arising from Balianta PS Case Nos. 220 and 221 of 2026 under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Smt. Ratnaprava Satapathy, OPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police, CID Crime Branch, reached the spot to lead the investigation. She began inquiries into the alleged sexual assault in public view and the subsequent mob violence that resulted in the death of Constable Soumya Ranjan Swain.
Superintendent of Police Sri Anirudha Routray directly supervised the investigation. His oversight ensured transparency and accountability in handling the sensitive matter.
The CID Crime Branch emphasised its commitment to uncovering the truth and delivering justice. The probe aims to establish facts, identify perpetrators, and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
