Tensions flared in the capital city today as party workers and leaders belonging to the INDIA Alliance launched a massive march towards the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
The demonstrators raised strong protests demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, while vehemently condemning alleged police atrocities against Gen-Z activists and media professionals.
Allegations of Electoral Irregularities and Vote Theft
Carrying banners and shouting anti-government slogans, the protesters alleged rampant irregularities and vote tampering in the democratic election process. Addressing the crowd, Alliance leaders asserted that the sanctity of the vote must be preserved at all costs and demanded that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar be immediately removed from his post to ensure free and fair elections.
“Voting is sacred in a democracy. When allegations of vote theft surface, the election authorities lose their moral right to remain in power. This struggle will continue until democratic principles are fully restored,” stated an opposition activist during the rally.
Outrage Over Police Action on Youth and Journalists
Beyond electoral reforms, the march highlighted growing anger over state law enforcement tactics. Protesters accused the administration of utilising excessive police force to muzzle democratic dissent, specifically targeting Gen-Z youth demonstrators and journalists covering the events.
Speakers at the rally argued that police action against young citizens and members of the press represents a direct assault on fundamental democratic rights, urging civil society to unite against state-sponsored suppression.
Police Deployment and Ongoing Movement
In response to the Assembly march, heavy security forces were deployed across key junctions in Bhubaneswar to prevent demonstrators from breaching security perimeters. Despite police blockades, opposition leaders affirmed that their agitation will persist until their demands are met in full.
Calling upon citizens to come together, the INDIA Alliance reiterated its resolve to protect democracy and safeguard fair electoral practices across the state.
