Er. Ashok Basa, Past President of the Institution of Engineers (India) and alumnus of Regional Engineering College (REC), now National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, took charge as Internal Auditor of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) for 2025–2027.
The WFEO Executive Board appointed Basa in accordance with its Rules of Procedure. Moreover, in its communication, the Board emphasised that Basa’s experience, professionalism, and dedication to the engineering community make him exceptionally suited for the role. His term began on December 12, 2025, and WFEO statutes allow renewal.
WFEO, which UNESCO established in 1968, stands as the largest international professional body of engineers and engineering organisations. It represents nearly 100 countries and promotes engineering as a driver for sustainable development, good governance, and global cooperation.
Basa created history as the first Indian to serve as the Internal Auditor of WFEO since its inception. Earlier, he served as Executive Vice President of WFEO (2022–2025) and became only the second Indian to hold that prestigious leadership role. In addition, he chaired the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) during 2022–2023 and 2023–2025.
As Internal Auditor, Basa will review WFEO’s internal functions, including financial processes, compliance mechanisms, and governance systems. He will prepare reports for the Executive Board and strengthen WFEO’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and sound governance. Consequently, he will serve as a non-voting member of both the Executive Board and the Executive Council.
India’s engineering fraternity celebrates this appointment as a matter of pride and recognises Basa’s sustained contributions to engineering leadership at national and global levels.
