Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday became the longest-serving occupant of the post, completing 2,258 days in office since assuming charge on May 30, 2019.

He surpassed the previous record held by BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani, who served for 2,256 days between 1998 and 2004.

The milestone coincides with August 5, the date in 2019 when Shah announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament, ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

At the NDA Parliamentary meeting in the Parliament Library Building, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shah for his tenure, praising his leadership and contributions to internal security.

Shah’s tenure also surpasses that of Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant, who served from 1955 to 1961, totaling six years and 56 days.
