Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has reported a significant rise in cybercrime incidents in Bhubaneswar for the year 2024.
According to the latest statistics, the city recorded 7,263 cybercrime cases, marking a 50% increase from the 4,832 cases reported in 2023.
The surge in cybercrime has been attributed to a rise in financial and social media frauds. Out of the total cases, 2,653 were related to financial fraud, 1,872 to UPI transaction fraud, 781 to credit/debit card fraud, and 1,076 to social media fraud.
The financial impact of these crimes was substantial, with fraudsters swindling victims out of Rs 82.53 crore.
The Commissionerate Police have taken several measures to combat this rise, including the registration of 322 FIRs and the arrest of 38 cyber criminals, 20 of whom were from outside the state.
Despite these efforts, the increase in cybercrime highlights the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and public awareness to protect citizens from such threats.
