India have lost the No.1 spot in the T20I rankings to England despite Shreyas Iyer’s side completing a 3-0 series win over Afghanistan.
England reclaimed the top position after Harry Brook’s side defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third and final T20I on Sunday to complete a 3-0 series sweep.
This is the second time in 2026 that India have lost the No.1 T20I ranking. England had previously moved to the top after defeating India 4-0 earlier this year.
Why England moved ahead of India
India and England are level on 269 rating points, but their ranking totals are different because of the number of matches played.
India have accumulated 17.201 points from 64 matches, while England have 11.021 points from 41 matches. The ranking calculation consequently puts England ahead of India.
England’s latest series win over Sri Lanka helped the side reclaim the top position.
The two teams had also met in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final at Wankhede Stadium earlier this year. India, then led by Suryakumar Yadav, won the high-scoring contest before going on to defend their T20 World Cup title.
England’s strong run under Harry Brook
England have enjoyed a strong run in T20I cricket since Brook took over as their white-ball captain. The side has won 23 of its 26 T20Is under his leadership.
Brook was also named Player of the Series against Sri Lanka after England completed the 3-0 sweep. He scored a century in the opening match before helping England secure the series.
After the third T20I, Brook said adapting to different conditions had been central to England’s recent results.
He said the team wanted to be capable of winning even when conditions were not favourable and added that England were “trending in the right direction”.
India’s recent T20I form
India’s T20I campaign under Iyer got off to a difficult start after he replaced Suryakumar as captain.
India lost the first two assignments under Iyer, going down 0-2 against Ireland before suffering a 0-4 defeat against England in a five-match series.
The team subsequently recovered with 3-0 series wins over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.
Despite those results, India’s latest ranking position means England have once again moved ahead at the top of the T20I table.
India prepare for Asian Games
India are now preparing to defend their gold medal at the Asian Games.
The team will look to carry its recent winning momentum into the tournament after completing consecutive 3-0 T20I series victories against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.
England’s return to No.1 adds another dimension to the T20I rankings, with both teams currently separated despite having the same rating points.
