BCCI Confident Asia Cup Trophies Will ‘Land’ In Mumbai After Mohsin Naqvi Stand-Off

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said the Asia Cup trophies won by the Indian men’s and women’s teams will eventually reach its headquarters in Mumbai, even as the standoff over their presentation continues.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made the statement after the board’s 95th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Friday. However, he declined to provide a specific timeline for the trophies’ arrival.

“I will not give you a timeline, but I can assure you that both the trophies will come up and land up in this BCCI head office at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai,” Saikia said.

Trophies Remain At ACC Headquarters

The development follows the decision by India’s men’s and women’s teams not to accept their respective Asia Cup trophies from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi.

The women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, skipped the official trophy presentation after defeating Sri Lanka in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup final last week. The Indian men’s team had taken a similar position after winning the previous edition.

The trophies are currently reported to be at the ACC headquarters in Dubai.

Saikia had earlier described the women’s team’s decision as a “firm institutional decision”, saying the BCCI had communicated in advance that the Indian team would not participate in the trophy presentation under the proposed arrangement.

BCCI Had Proposed Alternative Trophy Presentation

According to Saikia, the BCCI had suggested that an ACC deputy chairman present the trophy to the Indian team instead of Naqvi.

The proposal was aimed at avoiding the controversy surrounding the presentation, but the arrangement did not materialise.

The issue has kept the Asia Cup trophy controversy in focus, particularly because Naqvi is both the ACC president and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Naqvi’s ACC Tenure Nears End

Saikia’s latest comments also come as Naqvi’s tenure as ACC president approaches its reported end in April 2027. His continuation in the role would depend on the support of ACC member boards.

For now, the BCCI has maintained that the two trophies will eventually be brought to its headquarters in Mumbai, without committing to a specific date.

The Indian women’s team has since moved on to the Asian Games in Japan, where it began its title defence with a win over Japan in the women’s T20 cricket quarter-final.
