Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of Semicon India 2026 today, bringing together global tech leaders, investors, and policymakers under the theme ‘Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.’

The three-day conference highlights India’s transition into a semiconductor manufacturing and design hub. Ahead of the inauguration, PM Modi met with CEOs from global giants—including Micron, ASML, Applied Materials, Intel, and Tata Electronics—to advocate for joint initiatives in innovation and skill development.

This landmark event comes on the heels of the government’s newly expanded India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, backed by an outlay of Rs 1.27 lakh crore.

While the first phase brought in 12 manufacturing and assembly projects, Semicon 2.0 shifts focus to domestic chip design, local intellectual property, and building a local supply chain for equipment, speciality gases, and silicon wafers.

To incentivise production, the government is offering up to 40% capital expenditure support for silicon wafer fabs and 35% for advanced packaging facilities.

A core focus of the new mission is training 100,000 new semiconductor engineers. This talent pool will support the estimated 50,000 to 60,000 direct jobs created by the expanding domestic industry.
