The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has seen a massive surge in farmer enrollments in Odisha for the Kharif season of 2023–24, following the state government’s landmark decision to cover farmers’ insurance premium costs.
According to recently published figures, farmer applications skyrocketed from 80.21 lakh in the 2022–23 season to a staggering 1.41 crore in 2023–24, marking a 76% growth. This significant increase highlights the growing trust in the crop insurance scheme, aimed at shielding farmers from crop loss risks due to natural calamities.
District-specific data reveal that the government’s revised policy has positively influenced farmer participation across Odisha. Claims disbursed to beneficiaries during the same period amounted to ₹217.18 crore, underlining the scheme’s commitment to ensuring financial security.
This development showcases how a supportive policy framework can enhance the adoption of welfare schemes. Experts believe the trend could set a precedent for other states to emulate.
