Five orangutans reach Nandankanan after rare rescue in Baleshwar forest; trafficking suspected

Five young orangutans, animals that do not belong in Indian forests at all, arrived at Nandankanan Zoological Park late Tuesday evening after a startling rescue from a reserved forest in Odisha’s Baleshwar district.

The primates were found on Tuesday morning near Badpahi in the Rankotha reserved forest under Bhograi block. Locals first noticed the unusual animals moving through the trees. Word spread fast. A large crowd gathered, videos circulated, and forest staff rushed in before the scene could turn chaotic.

A patrol team of the Udayapur forest division reached the spot around 6 am and rescued all five animals without using tranquillisers. They were first taken to the Udayapur forest office, then to a local veterinary facility for a health check. Four were found to be stable and were later given fruit and oral rehydration solution. One animal’s condition was described as less settled and was sent to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) for closer medical care.

From Bhograi, the rescued orangutans were moved in a special vehicle to Nandankanan. Zoo officials said the four healthier animals have been placed in a special quarantine enclosure. After they adapt to the local climate and complete observation, they will be shifted to a dedicated housing area. Their long-term future will be decided only after further medical and legal review.

That is the easy part of the story. The hard part is the question nobody can yet answer: how did they get here?

Orangutans are not native to India. They live in the rainforests of Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo and Sumatra. There is no wildlife corridor that could have brought them into coastal Odisha on their own. Forest officials say natural migration is effectively impossible.

The animals appear to be juveniles, estimated at about one to two years old and roughly one to one-and-a-half feet tall. Later official briefings also indicated three males and two females among the five. In the wild, orangutan infants stay with their mothers for years. Finding five young animals together in a casuarina plantation near the Odisha–West Bengal belt has therefore sharpened suspicion that they were taken from their habitat and moved through an illegal trade route.

Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said the species is not found in India and that an investigation would trace where the animals came from and how they entered the state. He did not rule out the role of an international wildlife smuggling network. One orangutan can fetch about ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh in the international black market, he said, adding that the animals may have been brought by air, rail or water. The minister has asked the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) to investigate and directed checks of CCTV footage at airports, railway stations and ports.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Prem Kumar Jha said the Wildlife Wing of the Forest Department is already on the case, local police have been informed, and arrangements would be made to keep the animals at Nandankanan. “This species is not normally seen in India. Where they came from and how they arrived will be investigated,” he said.

Baleshwar Divisional Forest Officer Pratik Prakash Indalkar said the animals were eating and otherwise stable, but their origin remains under detailed inquiry. Senior officials have described the episode as likely the result of human intervention — possibly a botched transit operation in which the animals were abandoned after being brought into the coastal belt. A separate team has been deployed in the Rankotha–Badpahi area, and coastal forest divisions have been alerted to look for any other abandoned animals.

Nandankanan is no stranger to orangutans. The zoo once housed Binny, an orangutan who died in February 2019 at the age of 41. That history makes Tuesday’s arrival even more striking: five young members of a critically endangered species, appearing overnight in a district that has never been their home.

For now, the five are safe. Four are under quarantine in Bhubaneswar. One is under medical watch. The forest and the coastline around Bhograi are under special observation. What remains open is the darker trail behind them — a trail that may run through ships, trains, airports, and an illegal market that prices a baby orangutan in lakhs and treats a rainforest childhood as cargo.

The government has called the case serious. The investigation has only just begun.
