Police have achieved a major breakthrough in the armed robbery case at the residence of retired teacher Lachman Thakur in Gauntiaguda village under Jharigaon police limits.
On July 10, a gang of 5–6 armed robbers stormed Thakur’s house late at night, breaking open an almirah and looting Rs 3 lakh in cash along with gold ornaments. Treating the incident with utmost seriousness, Jharigaon IIC formed a special team that successfully arrested two accused.
The arrested men — Umakant Harijan (22) of Dhanpur village and Dhansai Mohara (27) of Semala village — were produced in court today. Police recovered Rs 1.55 lakh cash, one motorcycle, three mobile phones, and weapons used in the robbery.
Officials revealed that the duo were also involved in a separate robbery in Hatibadi village in November 2024. Investigations suggest the gang has 3–4 more members, whose names have not yet been disclosed for operational reasons. Authorities assured that the remaining culprits and stolen gold will be recovered soon.
At a press briefing, Umerkote SDPO Subhendu Sabar credited the success to coordinated efforts under SP Kashyap’s supervision, with support from Koraput district police. The conference was attended by Jharigaon IIC Rachita Madkami and Umerkote IIC Jugal Kishore Sabar.
