Smart City Underwater: Heavy Rains Leave Raurkela Residents Stranded

Torrential rains have turned parts of Rourkela into a waterlogged mess, exposing serious gaps in the city’s much-hyped smart infrastructure. Since Wednesday night, continuous downpours have flooded residential areas, submerged roads, and disrupted daily life across the steel city in Odisha’s Sundaragada district.

Water has entered homes in several localities, including Indira Nagar, Machhli Market Basti, Malgodam, Telugupara, and Tilkanagar near Bandamunda. The second entrance of Raurkela railway station and its parking areas were completely submerged, stranding vehicles and forcing residents to wade through knee-deep water. Commuters struggled as major roads turned into temporary rivers, while household items floated inside flooded homes in some low-lying colonies.

The situation has drawn sharp political criticism. Biju Janata Dal president and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik took to X to call the waterlogging a “serious concern” that endangers lives and property. He accused the state government of incompetence and abandoning residents at a critical time. Patnaik contrasted the current crisis with Raurkela’s proud moment of hosting the Hockey World Cup, noting that the same smart city is now facing public criticism due to collapsed drainage and sewerage systems. He urged authorities to provide immediate relief and assistance to those affected.

Officials and local reports confirm that the intense rainfall overwhelmed the city’s drainage network. Sambalpur University cancelled certain undergraduate examinations because of the conditions. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for further heavy to very heavy rain in parts of north Odisha, including Sundargarh, raising fears that the situation could worsen.

Residents have voiced frustration over clogged drains and slow official response. While Odisha has long been praised for its disaster management capabilities during major cyclones and floods, critics argue that routine urban rainwater management in a designated smart city has fallen short.

Authorities are monitoring the situation as more showers are forecast. Relief efforts and drainage clearing are expected to intensify in the coming hours, but for many families in Raurkela, the immediate priority remains recovering from the sudden deluge that has left their streets and homes underwater.
