Authorities in Nepal’s Darchula district have sounded a fresh flood alert after a massive landslide in Bhattar, Api Himal Rural Municipality, partially blocked the Chaulani River (Chamelia).
Large debris has disrupted the river’s flow, prompting warnings that further landslides could completely obstruct the channel, leading to sudden breaches and flash floods downstream.
Local officials and security forces have urged residents along the riverbanks to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions. Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatta has directed agencies to stay on high alert and prepare for emergencies.
Emergency contact numbers have been released, while personnel from the Nepal Chameliya Hydropower Security Base in Balanch are monitoring the river to warn communities if conditions worsen.
The Armed Police Force confirmed that the river is currently flowing at normal levels, but instability remains a concern, especially with heavy rainfall forecast.
The Chaulani River originates in the Api Himal region and flows into the Mahakali River, which forms part of the Nepal–India border. The warning comes as Nepal continues recovery efforts from recent devastating floods that displaced communities and caused widespread damage.
Officials cautioned that additional rainfall could worsen the situation, heightening the risk of another flash‑flood emergency.
