The Odisha State Crime Branch Cyber Crime Police Station has arrested Rinku @ Suvendra Rout in connection with a Facebook Marketplace fraud case, marking a major breakthrough in tackling online scams.

The accused allegedly cheated a prospective buyer by posing as a recovery agent dealing in finance‑defaulted vehicles. He induced the complainant to purchase a Hyundai i20 and collected Rs 3.8 lakh via digital payments and bank transfers. However, the vehicle was never delivered and was later found lying at the stockyard.

The case was registered under Case No. 18 dated 10.08.2026 at the Cyber Police Station, invoking multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act, 2000. Investigators analysed digital and financial evidence to identify and arrest the accused on 11.08.2026. The probe continues to trace other individuals involved and the money trail.

Meanwhile, the Crime Branch clarified reports in local newspapers alleging that the vehicle used in the operation lacked valid insurance and PUC certificates. Officials confirmed the vehicle had a valid IFFCO Tokio insurance policy (valid till Feb 2027) and a PUC certificate (valid till Mar 2027).

The Crime Branch urged citizens to remain cautious while purchasing vehicles through Facebook Marketplace or other social platforms, advising them to verify sellers, ownership documents, and vehicle papers before making payments. Victims of cyber fraud are encouraged to report incidents to the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) or lodge complaints at www.cybercrime.gov.in for prompt action.
