Anticipating a record turnout of devotees for the Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath and His siblings, the Odisha Police has implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan in Puri to ensure safe and smooth movement during one of the biggest events of the annual Rath Yatra.
Traffic IG Amitabh Thakur said the traffic arrangements introduced during the Rath Yatra have been extended for the Suna Besha celebrations, as authorities expect a larger crowd than last year.
Over 10 lakh devotees expected for Suna Besha
According to the police, more than 10 lakh devotees are expected to visit Puri for the sacred Suna Besha ritual, making traffic management one of the administration’s biggest challenges.
To handle the rush, authorities have created 30 designated parking locations across the city. These facilities can accommodate around 8,500 four-wheelers, over 30,000 two-wheelers, and include three dedicated parking areas for buses.
400+ free auto-rickshaws arranged for devotees
To make travel easier, the district administration has arranged more than 400 free auto-rickshaw services to ferry devotees between parking areas and the Grand Road (Bada Danda).
The free transport service aims to reduce congestion while helping pilgrims reach the chariots conveniently.
Multiple platforms to provide real-time traffic updates
The Odisha Police is using several communication channels to keep devotees informed about traffic conditions and parking availability.
Real-time updates are being shared through:
- SMS alerts
- Local media
- FM radio
- Social media platforms
- LED display boards installed along the Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway, Puri-Konark Road, and Jagannath Road
These updates are intended to help visitors plan their journey and avoid traffic congestion.
Vehicle restrictions in place for Suna Besha
As part of the traffic plan, the movement of four-wheelers has been completely restricted between Batagaon Chhak and Atharnala during the Suna Besha celebrations.
Visitors travelling by car have been advised to park their vehicles at the designated parking facilities near Talabania and Sterling Chhak before using the free auto services to reach the Grand Road.
Police urge devotees to follow traffic advisory
Traffic IG Amitabh Thakur appealed to devotees to follow the official traffic advisory and cooperate with police personnel deployed across the city.
He said public cooperation would help minimise traffic congestion and ensure a safe, smooth and hassle-free darshan experience for everyone.
Additional police personnel have also been deployed at key locations to manage crowds, regulate vehicle movement and maintain public safety throughout the Suna Besha festivities.
