Authorities seized marijuana worth Rs 5 crore at Bhubaneswar Airport, arresting two passengers arriving from Bangkok.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs officials intercepted the duo after suspicious luggage checks revealed 11 kilograms of marijuana concealed inside their bags.
The seizure marks one of the largest recent narcotics busts at the airport. Officials confirmed that the contraband was carefully packed to evade detection but was identified during routine scanning. The two passengers were immediately detained for questioning, and further investigation is underway to trace the network behind the smuggling attempt.
Sources indicated that the consignment was intended for distribution in Odisha and neighbouring states. The arrests highlight growing concerns over international drug trafficking routes targeting regional airports.
Authorities emphasised their commitment to curbing narcotics smuggling and assured strict legal action against those involved. The case has been registered, and the accused will face prosecution under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
The successful operation underscores the vigilance of enforcement agencies in safeguarding the state against drug inflows.
