Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, marking her first official visit to India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined her at the forecourt of the presidential complex as marching contingents from the three services and a military band honoured the visiting leader.
Takaichi is in India from July 1–3 at Modi’s invitation to attend the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. Later in the day, both leaders will hold bilateral talks at Hyderabad House to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, and other key sectors.
After the reception, Prime Minister Takaichi, accompanied by Modi, met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and several Cabinet colleagues. Union ministers greeted her warmly with folded hands, and she reciprocated the gesture. Both prime ministers shook hands and posed for photographs, symbolising the cordial ties between the two nations.
Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday and shared photos of her arrival on X. Modi reshared the post, welcoming her and emphasising the importance of advancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. He highlighted that joint efforts will continue to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the visit as an “important step” in strengthening ties. The summit will provide an opportunity to review the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
