Heinrich Malan stepped down as head coach of Ireland’s men’s cricket team just a day after guiding his side to a historic 2-0 T20I series win over world champions India in Belfast.
The 45-year-old South African announced his decision on Monday morning, surprising players and fans alike.
Ireland stunned India with a dominant opening win on Friday and sealed the series with a thrilling one-run victory on Sunday. Malan’s exit came despite his contract running until 2027, marking a strategic move to allow a smooth transition before the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan in August.
Under Malan’s leadership since 2022, Ireland achieved unprecedented milestones — a T20 World Cup win over England, their first Test victories against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, and consistent qualifications for global tournaments. He also expanded Ireland’s talent pool and strengthened its development system.
Reflecting on his tenure, Malan said, “It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff, and the wider Irish cricket community. We can look back with great pride on our achievements.”
Cricket Ireland’s High-Performance Director Graeme West praised Malan for transforming the national setup and deepening the squad’s strength. His successor will inherit a team at its peak, ready to chase 50-over World Cup glory.
