Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded “Guardian of the Blue Horizon,” Seychelles’ highest presidential honour for leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development during his three-day visit to the island nation.
The recognition highlights India’s growing role in global climate action and strengthens the strategic partnership between India and Seychelles.
PM Modi Dedicates Honour to Climate Action
Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the honour to countries working together to address climate change and protect the environment for future generations.
He thanked the people and government of Seychelles, along with President Patrick Herminie, for conferring the prestigious distinction.
The Prime Minister also stressed that climate change is a global challenge that requires collective action and international cooperation.
PM Modi Highlights India’s Green Initiatives
In his message, PM Modi highlighted India’s commitment to sustainable development through several key initiatives.
He referred to the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) Mission, which encourages environmentally responsible lifestyles, and global initiatives led by India, including:
- International Solar Alliance (ISA)
- Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)
- Other international sustainability partnerships
He said these efforts reflect India’s commitment to building a greener and more sustainable future.
Latest Addition to PM Modi’s Global Environmental Honours
The Seychelles honour adds to a growing list of international recognitions received by PM Modi for environmental leadership and sustainable development.
Some of the major honours include:
- FAO Agricola Medal (2026): Awarded for contributions to food security, sustainable agriculture and agricultural reforms.
- UN Champions of the Earth Award (2018): The United Nations’ highest environmental honour recognising leadership in climate action.
- Seoul Peace Prize (2018): Awarded for promoting sustainable economic growth, global cooperation and inclusive development.
India-Seychelles Partnership Gets a Boost
During the visit, PM Modi held wide-ranging discussions with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie at the State House.
The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across several sectors and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
India and Seychelles share longstanding historical, cultural and people-to-people ties. Seychelles also remains an important maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region under India’s Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).
PM Modi’s Seychelles Visit Continues
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Seychelles at the invitation of President Patrick Herminie.
As part of the visit, he is scheduled to:
- Attend Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
- Address the National Assembly of Seychelles.
- Interact with members of the Indian diaspora.
- Hold additional engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.
