A migrant worker from Nuapada district died while returning home from Karnataka, and his body reached his village late last night.
Biswambar Majhi of Biswanathpur village under Komna block had left for Karnataka four months ago to work at a brick kiln. He collapsed suddenly on a train while returning home and died. Doctors at Sitapur Medical in Karnataka conducted a post-mortem before handing over the body to relatives.
The ambulance carrying his remains reached Bishwanathpur after midnight. The family paid Rs 20,000 for transportation, while the kiln owner contributed Rs 30,000. The total cost of bringing the body home was Rs 50,000.
Biswambar was the only earning member of his family. His death has left his aged father, Shyam Sundar Majhi, wife Dalimba Majhi, son Bhupendra (14), and daughter Chanchala (11) in despair. The family depended on his income from migrant work outside the state.
Nuapada Labour Officer Jasmin Sahu stated that the government will provide assistance to the bereaved family. However, the tragedy exposes the harsh reality behind official claims of a “dadan-free Nuapada.” Despite assurances, many families continue to send members to other states for survival, often facing exploitation and fatal risks.
