Odisha has taken a significant step towards wildlife conservation with the inauguration of the state’s first-ever elephant training centre at Simelpadar in Kalahandi district. The facility was formally inaugurated on Friday by Odisha Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia as part of the state government’s two-year completion celebrations.

The newly established centre is located in the Karlapat region, one of Odisha’s important elephant corridors, and is expected to play a crucial role in managing elephant movement and reducing growing human-elephant conflicts across the region.

Major Initiative for Elephant Conservation

Forest officials said the training centre has been designed to help frontline forest personnel better understand elephant behaviour, improve monitoring systems, and develop effective strategies to manage wildlife movement.

The Karlapat landscape has witnessed frequent elephant activity in recent years, often leading to conflicts between humans and wild elephants. Authorities believe the new facility will strengthen conservation efforts while ensuring the safety of local communities.

Speaking at the inauguration, Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said that effective management of elephant corridors is essential for balancing wildlife protection with community welfare.

“The elephant training centre will help improve wildlife management and contribute significantly to reducing conflicts involving wild elephants. Protecting elephant habitats while ensuring the safety of local residents remains a key priority,” he said.

Wildlife Monitoring Tower Also Inaugurated

Alongside the elephant training centre, the minister also inaugurated a new wildlife monitoring tower in the region.

The tower will enable forest officials to closely monitor wildlife movement, strengthen surveillance operations, and respond quickly to potential threats involving wild animals.

According to forest department officials, the monitoring infrastructure will improve data collection and help formulate long-term conservation strategies for the Karlapat ecosystem.

Addressing Rising Human-Elephant Conflict

Odisha has one of the largest elephant populations in India and frequently experiences incidents involving crop damage, property loss, and attacks linked to elephant movement.

The new training centre is expected to:

  • Improve elephant tracking and behavioural studies.
  • Enhance skills of forest personnel.
  • Support scientific wildlife management practices.
  • Reduce human-elephant and elephant-elephant conflicts.
  • Strengthen conservation efforts in key elephant corridors.

A New Chapter in Odisha’s Wildlife Management

Conservation experts believe the initiative marks a new chapter in Odisha’s approach to wildlife protection. By combining training, monitoring, and scientific management, the state aims to create a safer environment for both elephants and people.

The Karlapat region continues to be one of Odisha’s most important wildlife habitats, and officials are hopeful that the new facilities will contribute to sustainable conservation and better coexistence between humans and wildlife
