Bhadrak witnessed a dramatic police encounter near Nuasahi, close to Bhadrak Law College, early Thursday morning.
Police confronted dreaded criminal Prafulla alias Papu Mallick, who sustained serious injuries during the exchange of fire.
The encounter unfolded around 3:30 AM when the Bhadrak rural police intercepted Papu and his associate. A violent scuffle broke out, leaving an inspector, an ASI, and a constable injured. Police retaliated with gunfire, hitting Papu. His associate managed to escape from the scene.
Authorities seized a pistol and live ammunition from the spot. Papu was rushed to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital and later referred to Cuttack for advanced treatment.
Police confirmed Papu’s involvement in more than 22 criminal cases across Bhadrak and Balasore districts. His record includes charges of robbery, extortion, and violent assaults. The incident highlights the growing intensity of police operations against hardened criminals in the region.
The injured officers are receiving treatment, while police have launched a manhunt to track down Papu’s absconding associate. Officials emphasised that the crackdown will continue until criminal networks are dismantled.
