Elon Musk-led Starlink has rejected reports claiming that its approval process in India has been frozen, stating that discussions with the Indian government remain active, productive and encouraging.

The clarification comes amid speculation over delays in the company’s plans to launch satellite internet services in one of the world’s largest digital markets.

Starlink Responds to Approval Freeze Reports

Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Business Operations at Starlink, said the company continues to engage constructively with Indian authorities and has completed all required regulatory and compliance procedures.

According to Dreyer, reports suggesting that Starlink’s approval process has been halted are based on unverified claims.

She stated that the company has maintained transparent communication with government agencies throughout the licensing process.

Company Says Feedback From India Has Been Encouraging

Starlink said it has received positive feedback regarding its ability to support India’s digital connectivity goals, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

The company believes its satellite-based internet services can help bridge connectivity gaps in areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited.

Dreyer reiterated Starlink’s commitment to launching services in India as soon as regulatory approvals are finalized.

What Is Starlink Waiting For?

Starlink has already applied for a satellite communications licence in India.

According to reports, the company has received a Letter of Intent from Indian authorities, with the final operating licence still pending.

The company said it has developed a customized deployment model designed specifically to comply with India’s regulatory, security and sovereign technology requirements.

Concerns Over Satellite Terminal Usage

Recent reports suggested that Indian authorities were examining security concerns linked to the use of Starlink satellite terminals in conflict zones, including developments related to the ongoing Iran crisis.

While those reports indicated that approvals may have slowed, Starlink has strongly denied any suggestion that the process has been suspended.

The company maintains that discussions with government officials continue without interruption.

Competition in India’s Satellite Internet Market

India’s satellite internet sector is becoming increasingly competitive.

Two companies have already received licences to provide satellite communication services:

  • Eutelsat OneWeb, backed by the Bharti Group
  • Jio Space Technology Limited (Jio-SGS)

Both companies are currently awaiting spectrum allocation before launching commercial services.

Starlink’s entry into India is expected to intensify competition in the growing satellite broadband market.

Why India Matters for Starlink

India represents one of the most significant growth opportunities for satellite internet providers due to its large population and vast rural geography.

For Starlink, securing access to the Indian market is strategically important as the company continues its global expansion plans.

The development also comes at a crucial time for parent company SpaceX, which is reportedly preparing for a major public offering that could become one of the largest IPOs in history.

Industry observers note that Starlink’s success in large markets such as India could play a key role in strengthening investor confidence and supporting future revenue growth.

Outlook

While Starlink is still awaiting final regulatory clearance, the company’s latest statement suggests that negotiations with Indian authorities remain on track.

If approvals are granted, Starlink could soon join India’s rapidly evolving satellite broadband sector, helping expand internet access across remote and underserved parts of the country.
