Widespread unrest erupted across parts of Belfast after a knife attack sparked anti-immigration protests that quickly escalated into violence. Several vehicles and buildings were set ablaze, while police and political leaders appealed for calm amid growing tensions.

The violence followed a stabbing incident in North Belfast that left a man critically injured. Authorities later charged a 30-year-old Sudanese national with attempted murder and other offences.

Vehicles and Properties Set on Fire

Large crowds gathered in several areas of Belfast after calls for demonstrations circulated online. As tensions escalated, masked groups reportedly set fire to vehicles, damaged properties, and clashed with security forces.

Visuals from the scene showed burning cars, smoke rising from residential streets, and emergency responders working to contain multiple fires. A public transport vehicle was also set ablaze in East Belfast.

Residents described chaotic scenes as violence spread through neighbourhoods.

Knife Attack Investigation Underway

Police said the unrest was triggered by a knife attack that occurred on Monday night in North Belfast. The victim suffered serious injuries and remains under medical care.

A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, drawing strong reactions and increasing public tensions.

Authorities confirmed that a suspect has been charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Possession of a bladed article in a public place
  • Making threats to kill

The accused is scheduled to appear before a Belfast court.

Police Say No Evidence of Terrorism

Northern Ireland police stated that there is currently no evidence linking the attack to terrorism.

Senior officers said investigations remain ongoing and urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the case.

Officials also warned that misinformation and inflammatory content online could further worsen tensions.

Political Leaders Condemn Violence

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned both the stabbing and the subsequent violence.

He described the attack as “sickening” and stressed that violent disorder would not be tolerated.

Northern Ireland officials echoed similar concerns, urging communities to reject violence and allow law enforcement agencies to conduct their investigations.

Community Leaders Appeal for Peace

Police and government representatives called on community leaders to help reduce tensions and prevent further disorder.

Authorities emphasized that peaceful protest is a democratic right but warned that criminal acts such as arson, vandalism, and attacks on property would face strict legal consequences.

Investigations into both the knife attack and the subsequent unrest remain ongoing.
