India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan after suffering a fresh injury setback during his recovery process.

The development comes as a significant blow to Team India, with Pandya now facing a race against time to regain full fitness ahead of the ODI series against England next month.

Fresh Injury Forces Hardik Pandya Out

According to reports, Hardik Pandya sustained a quadriceps strain after initially receiving fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

The 32-year-old had successfully completed a series of fitness tests and training drills before experiencing discomfort that prompted medical staff to reassess his condition.

Sources indicate that Pandya has been advised to undergo approximately two weeks of rehabilitation and recovery under close supervision.

As a result, he will remain at the Centre of Excellence and will not join the Indian squad for the Afghanistan series.

England Series Participation Uncertain

The latest injury concern has also raised doubts over Pandya’s availability for India’s ODI series against England scheduled for July.

While no final decision has been taken regarding his participation, medical staff are expected to monitor his progress carefully before determining his return timeline.

The Indian team management is likely to avoid rushing the all-rounder back into competitive cricket given his importance to future international tournaments.

Team India Faces Another Injury Concern

Pandya’s absence adds to India’s growing injury list ahead of an important phase of ODI cricket.

While captain Rohit Sharma has been declared fit for the Afghanistan series, Virat Kohli has already been ruled out due to a hamstring injury.

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been named as Kohli’s replacement in the squad.

The selectors are yet to announce whether a replacement will be named for Pandya.

Challenging Season for Hardik Pandya

The injury setback comes shortly after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for Pandya.

Leading Mumbai Indians, the all-rounder struggled with fitness concerns and missed several matches after suffering back spasms during the tournament.

Mumbai Indians also endured a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the points table for the second time under Pandya’s leadership.

The performance has sparked discussions about his future role within the franchise ahead of the next IPL season.

BCCI Focused on Long-Term Fitness

Recently, Pandya was not included in India’s T20I squads for the series against Ireland and England, as well as the upcoming Asian Games.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that the management’s priority is to keep Pandya fit for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

According to Agarkar, Pandya remains one of India’s most valuable players in the 50-over format due to the balance he provides as a batting all-rounder.

The selectors are focusing on managing his workload carefully and ensuring he remains available for major international assignments.

Key Player in India’s World Cup Plans

Despite his recurring fitness issues, Pandya continues to be a crucial part of India’s long-term ODI strategy.

His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him one of the most important players in the team’s World Cup plans.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa, the BCCI appears determined to prioritise his fitness and workload management over short-term participation.

For now, Team India will move forward without one of its most experienced match-winners as preparations begin for the Afghanistan series.
