A 28‑year‑old woman named Chandrika Hembram died after allegedly jumping into the Mahanadi River from the Trisulia Bridge in Cuttack on Thursday.
Passersby noticed a bag and a pair of slippers lying unattended on the bridge and alerted the police. Personnel from Barang Police Station and the Fire Services Department reached the spot and began a search operation.
The rescue team recovered the woman’s body from the river and sent it to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for a post‑mortem. Police identified her based on a doctor’s prescription found inside her bag. A mobile phone was also recovered.
Locals claimed that the woman jumped into the river, but investigators are examining all possibilities. Police stated that they will not rule out foul play until the investigation concludes. Officers are exploring multiple angles to determine whether the death resulted from suicide or other circumstances.
