Andhra Pradesh officials allegedly carried out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Kotia villages of Odisha’s Koraput district, reigniting tensions over the disputed border region.
Reports confirmed that Andhra Pradesh teams entered Phatusineri and Phagunsineri villages on Wednesday and collected voter details door‑to‑door. Odisha authorities objected repeatedly, but Andhra officials continued their activities.
The Kotia dispute between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh has intensified in recent years. Odisha accelerated developmental projects in the region, while Andhra Pradesh allegedly attempted to influence locals through administrative visits and voter‑related exercises.
Recently, Odisha began census‑related work in Kotia. Andhra officials allegedly tried to counter these efforts, but the Pottangi block administration prevented interference. Despite resistance, Andhra teams continued discreet visits and have now initiated the SIR process.
Meanwhile, Odisha’s Pottangi administration is conducting its own voter list verification drive. Officials emphasised that the exercise aims to ensure accuracy and transparency for residents of Kotia.
In response to repeated incursions, the Koraput district administration decided to construct permanent check gates at three strategic border points. Authorities identified the sites and announced that construction will begin within days to monitor cross‑border movements.
