Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in India’s 30-member probables list for the Asian Games 2026 after a remarkable Indian Premier League season.
The young left-handed batter impressed cricket fans and selectors alike with his outstanding performances during IPL 2026, where he scored 776 runs in 16 matches. His inclusion marks another major milestone in his rapidly rising cricket career.
BCCI Submits Asian Games Probables List
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly submitted the 30-member long list to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The men’s cricket competition is scheduled to take place from September 24 to October 3, while India will simultaneously host a white-ball series against the West Indies. As a result, the BCCI is expected to field separate squads for the two assignments.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Rewarded for Stellar IPL Campaign
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerged as one of the biggest stories of IPL 2026. At just 15 years of age, he displayed remarkable maturity, consistency and attacking intent against some of the world’s best bowlers.
His selection in the probables list reflects the confidence selectors have shown in young talent as India prepares for future international tournaments, including the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle.
Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma in Captaincy Contention
With senior stars expected to focus on other international commitments, the captaincy race for the Asian Games squad appears to be between Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma.
According to reports, T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has not been included in the long list, while ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill is expected to lead India’s ODI side during the West Indies series and therefore is unlikely to be considered for the Asian Games squad.
The final leadership decision is expected to be taken closer to team selection.
Experienced Players Also Feature
Several established players have been included in the preliminary squad. The list features names such as Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Rinku Singh.
Bumrah’s inclusion provides flexibility for selectors, although reports suggest his workload management could keep him focused on ODI cricket ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup preparations.
Competition for Spin Department
India’s spin resources remain strong, with Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Harsh Dubey all featuring in the probables list.
Selectors are expected to choose only two specialist spin options for the Asian Games squad, while the remaining players could be considered for the West Indies series.
Asian Games Offers Big Opportunity for Emerging Players
The Asian Games presents an important platform for India’s next generation of cricketers. Young players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ayush Badoni, Vipraj Nigam and Harsh Dubey could use the tournament to strengthen their case for regular international selection.
For Sooryavanshi, inclusion in the probables list is another indication that Indian cricket’s future may already be arriving faster than expected.
As selectors prepare to finalise the squad, all eyes will remain on the teenager who has quickly become one of the most exciting talents in world cricket.
