Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced a textbook all-round effort to defeat Punjab Kings by 23 runs and become the first team to book their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs.

The reigning champions’ clinical showing with both bat and ball underlined their credentials as serious title contenders once again.

Batting first under the lights, RCB posted a formidable 222 for 4 in 20 overs. The innings was built on strong top-order foundations and finished with explosive acceleration. Virat Kohli once again showed his class, anchoring the batting with a fluent 58 off 37 balls. Devdutt Padikkal injected momentum with a brisk 45 off just 25 deliveries, while Venkatesh Iyer played the innings of the night — an unbeaten 73 off 40 balls that blended calculated aggression with superb timing.

The finishing touches came from Tim David, who smashed 28 off 12 balls, helping RCB race past the 220-mark and set a daunting target of 223.

Punjab Kings’ chase got off to a nightmare start as they slumped to 19 for 3 inside the first four overs. Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply, leaving the middle order under immense pressure. Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge tried to steady the ship, but regular breakthroughs kept the required run rate climbing.

Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh provided some resistance, with the latter top-scoring for PBKS with a fiery 56 off 27 balls. However, it was never enough. Rasikh Salam was the pick of the RCB bowlers, claiming 3 for 36, while experienced campaigners Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood shared crucial wickets to maintain control.

Punjab Kings eventually finished at 199 for 8 in 20 overs, falling 23 runs short despite their late efforts.

With this victory, RCB have not only strengthened their position at the top of the table but have also sent a strong message to the rest of the league. Their balanced squad, led by Kohli’s experience and bolstered by match-winners across departments, looks primed for another deep run in the tournament.

The road to the title continues, but Bengaluru have taken the first decisive step.
