Powerful Nor’wester storms swept across several parts of Odisha on Monday, causing widespread destruction and disrupting normal life in multiple districts.

The sudden spell of heavy rain and strong winds claimed the life of a minor girl in Mayurbhanj district while several others sustained injuries in storm-related incidents.

The intense weather system uprooted trees, damaged houses, snapped electricity lines, and blocked major roads, leaving residents struggling to cope with the aftermath.

Minor Girl Dies After Tree Branch Falls in Mayurbhanj

A tragic incident was reported from the Thakurmunda area of Mayurbhanj district, where a minor girl lost her life after a tree branch collapsed on her during the storm.

According to reports, the girl was returning home with her mother in Baliposi village when strong winds caused a large branch to break off and fall on them. Both suffered severe injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared the girl dead on arrival. Her mother is currently undergoing treatment.

The Nor’wester also caused major disruption in the region. A fallen tree blocked the busy Karanjia–Thakurmunda road for several hours, affecting vehicular movement and causing long traffic delays. Several houses in nearby villages were partially damaged due to the powerful winds.

Youth Suffers Critical Injuries in Deogarh

In Deogarh district, a youth sustained critical injuries after a tin asbestos sheet, blown away by the strong storm winds, reportedly severed his hand.

The incident occurred at a Hockey Training Centre in Kordapal village while labour work was underway. The injured youth was first admitted to the Deogarh District Headquarters Hospital and later shifted to Burla for advanced treatment after his condition worsened.

Houses Damaged, Roads Blocked in Several Areas

The Nor’wester unleashed significant damage in several villages under Tileibani and Barkote blocks. Strong winds blew away asbestos roofs, damaged mud houses, and destroyed household belongings in many areas.

Uprooted trees blocked roads at multiple locations, disrupting connectivity and affecting emergency response efforts. Residents faced major inconvenience as transportation and daily activities remained severely affected for hours after the storm.

IMD Issues Weather Alerts for Odisha

Amid the continuing weather fluctuations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heatwave conditions in different parts of Odisha.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during sudden weather changes, avoid taking shelter under trees, and follow official advisories to stay safe during storm activity.
