International Day for Elimination of Child Marriage

What began as a grassroots movement in rural India has transformed into a powerful global campaign. In a historic development, the United Nations General Assembly has officially designated November 27 as the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage’, backing an initiative spearheaded by child rights advocates.

The resolution was formally introduced in the UN General Assembly by the West African nation of Sierra Leone on September 4 and was co-sponsored by over 60 countries, including India.

The Path to Recognition

The initiative gains its foundation from the ‘Child Marriage Free India’ (Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat) movement launched by the child rights organisation Just Rights for Children. Prominent child rights activist and founder of the organization, Bhuwan Ribhu, had submitted a proposal to the United Nations advocating for an international day dedicated to curbing child marriage worldwide.

The date, November 27, holds deep significance as it marks the anniversary of the launch of India’s nationwide “Child Marriage Free India” campaign in 2024.

A Historic Milestone for Children’s Rights

Activists and policymakers have hailed the UN resolution as a major victory for millions of young girls in India and across the world who remain vulnerable to forced and early marriages. The adoption of this proposal reflects years of relentless effort by civil society organisations, grassroots activists, and international stakeholders.

Speaking on the milestone, Bhuwan Ribhu emphasized that the UN’s adoption of November 27 signifies a global commitment to eradicating child marriage, taking the message from rural Indian villages directly to the highest international stage.
