In a significant push to strengthen electoral integrity, Odisha’s Chief Electoral Officer R.S. Gopalan on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting with senior representatives of all seven recognised political parties to fine-tune the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.

The closed-door discussion, held under the CEO’s chairmanship, focused on executing the SIR process efficiently and transforming the state’s electoral rolls into a model of accuracy and transparency. With the goal of including every eligible voter while removing ineligible names, the meeting underscored the vital partnership between the Election Commission and political parties in safeguarding democracy.

Gopalan highlighted the indispensable role political parties play in this democratic exercise. “In a vibrant democracy, political parties are not just participants but active partners in ensuring that only genuine voters find a place in the electoral roll,” he said, stressing the need for collective efforts to maintain the purity of the voter list.

He urged all parties to immediately appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) at every polling station to monitor the revision process on the ground and extend full cooperation to election officials. The CEO also threw light on the technical and administrative roadmap of the SIR drive, urging prompt action on key issues.

Representatives from the parties actively shared their suggestions and concerns. The discussions revolved around streamlining the registration of new voters, resolving challenges faced by migrant voters, and swiftly deleting names of deceased persons and those who have permanently shifted out of constituencies. Several constructive proposals emerged during the interactive session, reflecting the parties’ commitment to a robust electoral process.

Gopalan assured the participants that all valid suggestions would be given due consideration. He promised that the Election Commission’s guidelines would be strictly followed and every necessary step taken in the coming days to make the SIR exercise a resounding success.

The meeting was also attended by Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sushant Kumar Mishra, Joint Chief Electoral Officer Gopinath Kuanr, and Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Dr Lakshmiprasad Sahu.

With this collaborative spirit, Odisha is gearing up for one of the most thorough voter-list revisions in recent years — a move that promises greater trust and transparency in the state’s electoral democracy.
