In a significant breakthrough, Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly stealing cash and jewellery from the residence of senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi.
The accused, identified as Rabindra Naik alias Gobara, was apprehended following a detailed investigation supported by CCTV footage.
Theft at Forest Park Residence
According to police, the incident took place in the early hours of May 1 at the officer’s residence in the Forest Park area. The accused allegedly scaled the rear boundary wall to gain entry into the premises. The location is considered a high-security zone, situated opposite the residence of Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh.
Valuables Stolen During the Incident
As per the complaint filed by the officer’s wife, Vaishali, the theft occurred between 12:30 am and 9:00 am. The accused reportedly stole a handbag containing cash, two gold earrings, and a diamond ring before fleeing the scene.
Repeat Offender with Criminal History
Police investigations revealed that the accused is a repeat offender with previous involvement in theft cases under Lingaraj and Airfield police station jurisdictions. His criminal background aided authorities in narrowing down the suspect list during the probe.
Partial Recovery, Search Ongoing
Officials confirmed that only a small amount of cash has been recovered so far, while efforts continue to trace the remaining stolen jewellery. Authorities are also investigating whether the accused acted alone or had accomplices.

The police have intensified their efforts to recover the stolen items and gather further evidence. The case has raised concerns about residential security, even in well-guarded areas, prompting calls for enhanced surveillance and safety measures.
