The Deep Depression over south Odisha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh weakened into a Depression on Friday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
According to the IMD’s 5:30 am bulletin, the system moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred over south interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh.
The system was located near latitude 20.5°N and longitude 82.5°E, close to Nuapada in Odisha.
Depression’s current position
The IMD said the centre of the Depression was about 90 km west-northwest of Titlagarh, 100 km northwest of Bhawanipatna, 110 km east-northeast of Kanker in Chhattisgarh and 120 km southeast of Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
The weather system is very likely to continue moving north-northwestwards while maintaining its intensity as a Depression for the next 12 hours, the IMD said.
It is then expected to weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area during the subsequent 12 hours.
IMD keeps system under surveillance
The weather system is being continuously monitored by Doppler Weather Radars at Sambalpur and Raipur, the IMD said.
The weakening of the system from a Deep Depression to a Depression indicates a reduction in its intensity as it moves further inland. However, the system is expected to continue influencing weather conditions over parts of Odisha and adjoining areas as it progresses north-northwestwards.
