The counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 commenced at 8 am on Monday under the supervision of the Election Commission of India. Initial trends indicate a competitive contest, with early leads emerging across multiple constituencies.

BJP Takes Early Lead

In the first round of counting, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moved ahead in several seats, leading in at least 14 constituencies. Meanwhile, the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) was ahead in around nine seats. These figures reflect early trends and are subject to change as counting progresses.

Key Battle: Bhabanipur and Nandigram

A major highlight of the early results is the performance of Mamata Banerjee, who is currently trailing in the Bhabanipur constituency against BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari, contesting from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram, is also leading in Nandigram, making these seats key battlegrounds in the election.

Constituency-Wise Early Trends

Preliminary data suggests BJP leads in constituencies such as Alipurduars, Arambag, Asansol Dakshin, Balarampur, Bhatpara, Falakata, Hingalganj, Manbazar, Mathabhanga, Nandigram, Pandabeswar, Purulia, and Siliguri.
On the other hand, TMC is ahead in seats including Asansol Uttar, Ballygunge, Beleghata, Chowrangee, Dinhata, Entally, Jangipur, Kamarhati, Mangalkot, Maniktala, Mekliganj, Sitalkuchi, and Sreerampur.

Other parties, including the Indian National Congress and All India Secular Front, have also registered leads in select constituencies.

Election Overview

Voting for the elections was conducted in two phases—April 23 and April 29—covering 294 assembly seats across the state. However, counting is currently underway for 293 seats following a repoll order in one constituency.

Dynamic Political Landscape

As counting continues, the early trends highlight a shifting political landscape in West Bengal. Analysts note that initial leads may fluctuate significantly as more rounds of counting are completed, making it essential to track updates throughout the day.

Conclusion

The early counting trends suggest a closely contested election, with both major parties vying for dominance. Final outcomes will depend on subsequent rounds of counting, which are expected to provide a clearer picture of the mandate.
