Counting of votes for the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 began at 8 AM under the supervision of the Election Commission of India.

The process started with postal ballots, followed by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) counts across 62 designated centres.

With a total of 234 constituencies in play, the majority mark stands at 118 seats. Over 5.7 crore voters participated in this high-stakes election, reflecting one of the highest voter turnouts in the state’s history.

Early Trends: DMK-Congress Alliance in Lead

Initial trends indicate that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress alliance is leading in a significant number of seats. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who briefly trailed in Kolathur, has made an early comeback as counting progresses.

The alliance appears poised to retain power, maintaining a steady lead across urban and rural constituencies.

TVK Makes Strong Debut in Tamil Nadu Politics

Actor-turned-politician Vijay has emerged as a key disruptor with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), leading in multiple constituencies.

In several seats, TVK candidates have pushed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) into third place—signaling a potential shift from Tamil Nadu’s traditionally bipolar political landscape.

AIADMK-BJP Alliance Faces Early Setback

The AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, is trailing in several constituencies, including his home turf Edappadi. The party’s alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has so far secured limited early leads.

This trend suggests a challenging electoral battle for the opposition alliance as counting continues.

Exit Polls vs Early Trends

Most exit polls had predicted an advantage for the DMK-led alliance, estimating between 120–145 seats. However, some projections suggested a tighter race, with TVK potentially making a significant electoral impact.

The early counting trends appear to align broadly with these predictions, though final results may shift as more rounds are completed.

Security and Counting Arrangements

A robust three-tier security system has been deployed at counting centres:

  • Outer perimeter: Restricted entry within 100 metres
  • Middle layer: Managed by State Armed Police
  • Inner layer: Secured by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)

Over 10,000 personnel and thousands of micro-observers have been deployed to ensure transparency and smooth operations.

High Voter Turnout Signals Strong Democratic Participation

Tamil Nadu recorded a voter turnout of 84.69%, the highest since Independence. Districts like Karur saw turnout exceeding 90%, while urban centres also reported strong participation.

The electorate included women, men, and third-gender voters, highlighting inclusive democratic engagement across the state.
