In a welcome development for residents across Odisha, seasonal Nor’wester thunderstorms have brought significant relief from the intense summer heat.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), no city in the state recorded a temperature above 40°C, marking a notable dip following recent severe heatwave conditions.
Rourkela emerged as the hottest city of the day in the state, registering a relatively moderate temperature of 35°C. Meanwhile, the state capital, Bhubaneswar, experienced a much cooler afternoon, with the mercury settling at 31.6°C. Other major cities also experienced cooler conditions, with Hirakud recording 33.2°C, Sambalpur at 33°C, Keonjhar at 33.6°C, and Jharsuguda at 34.2°C. Coastal and adjoining areas also experienced comfortable temperatures, including Chandbali (32.2°C), Puri (31.4°C), Balasore (31.2°C), Paradip (30°C), and Gopalpur (29.8°C).
This sudden shift in weather is attributed to Nor’wester-triggered rains—a vital pre-monsoon phenomenon known for bringing much-needed precipitation, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
These showers have not only lowered temperatures but also improved overall comfort levels across the region. Meteorologists suggest that these favorable weather patterns may continue for the next couple of days, potentially keeping temperatures in check and preventing extreme heat spikes as summer progresses.
