Dasun Shanaka Set to Join Rajasthan Royals as Replacement for Injured Sam Curran: Report

Rajasthan Royals are set to make a late squad change ahead of IPL 2026, with Dasun Shanaka emerging as the leading candidate to replace the injured Sam Curran.

Curran has reportedly been ruled out due to a groin injury, creating a significant gap in the team’s balance just days before the tournament begins.

Curran’s Absence Leaves Tactical Gap

The injury to Curran is a setback for Rajasthan, as the England all-rounder was expected to play a crucial role with both bat and ball.

His absence impacts:

  • Middle-order batting stability
  • Seam-bowling options in key overs
  • Overall team balance

With limited time before their opening match, the franchise has moved quickly to secure a replacement.

Why Shanaka Fits Rajasthan’s Plans

Shanaka brings a skill set that closely matches the team’s immediate needs. As Sri Lanka’s experienced T20 leader, he offers:

  • Explosive middle-order batting
  • Medium-pace bowling support
  • Leadership experience under pressure

While he may not have an extensive IPL record, his international exposure makes him a reliable and flexible option.

PSL Exit Highlights IPL’s Global Pull

The move also reflects the growing influence of the Indian Premier League. Shanaka, who was set to feature in the Pakistan Super League, is expected to prioritise the IPL opportunity instead.

He had been associated with Lahore Qalandars for PSL 2026, but is now likely to shift focus to the IPL, pending formal clearances.

Deal Nearing Completion

Reports suggest that the deal is in its final stages, with only procedural formalities remaining, including:

  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka Cricket
  • Contract-related paperwork linked to PSL commitments

Once completed, Shanaka could join the squad immediately.

Rajasthan Royals Prepare for Season Opener

Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Chennai Super Kings on March 30 in Guwahati.

Given the tight timeline, the team is likely to rely on Shanaka’s readiness and adaptability to fill the gap left by Curran.

What This Means for RR’s Campaign

While Shanaka’s inclusion may not fully replicate Curran’s impact, it offers a practical and low-risk solution to an unexpected problem.

The move also highlights:

  • The IPL’s continued dominance over other T20 leagues
  • The importance of squad depth in high-pressure tournaments
  • Rajasthan’s proactive approach to maintaining balance
