Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) could face an early challenge in IPL 2026, with key pacer Josh Hazlewood expected to miss the opening matches due to injury concerns.
The Australian fast bowler, who played a crucial role in RCB’s title-winning campaign last season, is still undergoing rehabilitation and is likely to join the squad only before their third fixture against Mumbai Indians on April 12.
Big Blow to RCB’s Bowling Attack
Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth believes Hazlewood’s absence could significantly impact RCB’s performance in the early stages of the tournament.
He pointed out that the team lacks a bowler with a similar skill set, making the situation more challenging.
“Josh Hazlewood’s absence is a big blow. Without him, the team’s energy levels will drop, and the bowling attack will weaken,” Srikkanth said.
Hazlewood’s Impact Last Season
The 35-year-old was instrumental in RCB’s IPL 2025 triumph, finishing as the team’s leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets in 12 matches. His consistency and ability to maintain pressure were key factors in ending Virat Kohli’s long wait for an IPL title.
Fear Factor Comparable to Bumrah
Srikkanth highlighted that Hazlewood brings a “fear factor” similar to Jasprit Bumrah, thanks to his precise line and length.
“He bowls that perfect Test-match length where batters struggle to decide whether to go forward or back,” he added.
Concerns Over Replacement Options
RCB have options like Jacob Duffy, but the New Zealand pacer has been inconsistent recently, raising doubts about his effectiveness in Indian conditions.
Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins is also expected to join his franchise late due to ongoing recovery, highlighting a broader concern over player fitness ahead of IPL 2026.
Key Bowling Partnership at Risk
Srikkanth also emphasised that RCB’s success last season was largely built on the strong bowling partnership between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hazlewood.
If this combination is disrupted, the team could struggle to replicate last year’s success.
