Russian Intelligence Tip-Off Leads to Arrest of US Citizen Mathew Aaron VanDyke and Six Ukrainians by National Investigation Agency

In a significant development with global security implications, Indian authorities have revealed that intelligence shared by Russia played a key role in the arrest of a US citizen and six Ukrainian nationals by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The individuals are accused of engaging in activities linked to training ethnic armed groups in Myanmar.

The arrests, carried out on March 13 at airports in Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata, are part of an ongoing investigation into suspected cross-border insurgent support networks.

Allegations of Drone Training and Equipment Supply

According to officials familiar with the probe, the group — including Mathew Aaron VanDyke — allegedly made multiple trips to Myanmar since 2024. They are suspected of supplying drones, jamming equipment, and providing technical training in drone warfare to ethnic armed groups.

Investigators believe these groups may have connections with insurgent organisations operating in India, raising serious national security concerns.

Illegal Travel Routes and Expanding Probe

The NIA informed a Delhi court that the accused entered India on tourist visas and travelled to the northeastern state of Mizoram without obtaining mandatory permits. From there, they allegedly crossed into Myanmar illegally.

Authorities are now working to identify individuals who may have assisted the group in navigating these routes. Investigations are also underway to trace eight additional suspects believed to be part of a larger network.

Legal Proceedings and Diplomatic Sensitivities

The seven accused have been remanded to NIA custody until March 27 as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, diplomatic concerns have emerged, particularly from Ukraine, which has called for a transparent and fair legal process for its nationals.

Ukrainian officials have sought greater consular access and involvement in the investigation, emphasising the importance of due process and legal safeguards.

The United States has acknowledged awareness of the situation but has not issued detailed comments regarding its citizen.

Security Concerns and Wider Implications

Indian agencies view the case as part of a broader pattern involving foreign nationals allegedly supporting insurgent groups in the region. The use of advanced technologies such as drones and jamming systems has heightened concerns about evolving security threats.

Officials have indicated that the investigation is still in its early stages, with efforts ongoing to uncover the full scope of the network and its international links.
