India strengthened its space ecosystem with new cybersecurity guidelines jointly released by CERT-In and SIA-India during the DefSat Conference & Expo 2026 in New Delhi.

The framework addresses satellite communication systems, ground infrastructure, supply chains, and space assets. It aims to enhance resilience against evolving cyber threats while supporting government agencies, satellite service providers, equipment vendors, and private enterprises.

CERT-In Director General Dr Sanjay Bahl emphasised the strategic importance of satellite networks to India’s technological sovereignty. He said the guidelines establish a unified framework to safeguard space systems against sophisticated cyber threats.

SIA-India President Dr Subba Rao Pavuluri highlighted the role of public-private partnership in building cyber resilience. He noted that the guidelines integrate industry perspectives with CERT-In’s expertise, marking a collaborative step forward for India’s space sector.

SIA-India Director General Anil Prakash stressed that cybersecurity must evolve into a core pillar of mission assurance. He pointed out that over 1.5 million cyberattack attempts were recorded during Operation Sindoor, underscoring the urgency of secure-by-design architectures.

The guidelines adopt an adaptive model that will be refined through industry consultation to remain responsive to emerging threats. They also encourage innovation aligned with national security imperatives.

With this initiative, India’s expanding space ecosystem gains a cyber shield that strengthens connectivity, disaster response, navigation, broadcasting, and national security operations.
