A picnic turned tragic near Gunupur in Rayagada district on Sunday when a young businessman drowned in the Sana River.
The deceased was identified as Jagannath Mishra, aged about 35, son of cement trader Prafulla Mishra. According to reports, Jagannath had gone with friends to the river near Limamunda–Nungurutal for a picnic. After lunch, he entered the river to bathe, but disappeared under the water.
His two friends tried to search for him, but all three became trapped in the current. Local youths rushed to the spot and managed to rescue two of them. Jagannath was pulled out and taken to the Gunupur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police later seized the body, conducted an autopsy, and handed it over to the family. The final rites were performed at Swargadwar in Puri.
